I love beets.  I really, truly love them.  If I see them on a menu, I will choose beets over almost anything else.

My least favorite color is blue.  I don’t hate it, I would just never pick it for anything.  If I were the captain of a kickball team, I would choose red first, and then green like my new curtains, and then maybe teal.  Yellow would be one of my last choices.  But not as last as blue.  Blue would be the last one standing.

My left ring toe – the one next to the pinky toe – is broken.  Or something.  I have a tendency to overreact to physical ailments, so it’s hard to tell – but something is definitely wrong with it.  All of a sudden, it’s gigantic – Elmer Fudd might as well have dropped an anvil on his foot.  The weird thing is that it doesn’t really hurt – but it’s swollen and purple.  I still ran for 40 minutes last night, though.  That probably didn’t help.

When I run, I listen to what I have been told is the “worst running music ever” – mid-90’s country.  I can’t help it.  The songs are so good.  In the 90’s, Nashville still operated by the principle of “the best song wins” – before it became so politicized and exclusive.  So last night, I was all, “Trisha Yearwood?  Patty Loveless?  Blackhawk?  YES PLEASE.”

These days, at least there’s Lori McKenna.

For as stilted and exhausting as it can be to move to a new city, I am reminded of something that I felt a lot of when I first moved to Nashville: potential.  The first days in a new place have a lonely sweetness to them – quiet possibility.  Each person that I meet might wind up being my friend.  Each road I drive down might lead to a surprise.

So.  Denver, ho.

I just wanted to tell you all of these things today.

Two things: One of the items on the menu last night at Nostrana was a beet ravioli. Jenny had it, I tried it. It was amazing, and I don’t really even like beets that much.

Also, I heartily concur when it comes to 90’s country. It’s what made me move to Nashville, and what’s on the radio now is why I wasn’t the least bit sad to leave the music business. It’s a completely different world.

I haven’t thought of Blackhawk in years… Michelle Wright? Pam Tillis? For The Wind!

Pam’s latest album “Rhinestoned” is actually pretty great. “Band In The Window” is fun, but will probably make you homesick for Nashvegas. “Train Without A Whistle” and “Someone Somewhere Tonight” rip out your heart and then they stomp on it a bit…but in a good way.

Leslie! Pam Tillis’ “Train Without a Whistle” is FANTASTIC. It’s one of those songs that is so well-written, you know the next line before it’s ever sung – not because it’s cliche, but because each line sets up the next so perfectly, it couldn’t possibly be anything different. I love it.

Pam is one of my favorites ever. All of a sudden, I want to sing “Maybe It Was Memphis” at the top of my lungs.

Blue? Seriously, Annie? What have you got against blue? OH, wait, maybe it stems from all those years of watching the FPC choir sing in robes that were the blue version of pepto bismal, while sitting in a completely different shade of blue chairs on yet a different shade of blue carpet.
I love blue. But, not pepto bismal blue.

    Jamie Oliver does beets right.

I’ll still like you even if you don’t like my fave color. (blue ties with Orange, b/c I’m obnoxious, but at least they are complementary on the color wheel, and let’s be honest, ocean and sunset, blue and orange, come on!)

I saw all those country artists at every county fair in the 90’s. That’s why I moved to Seattle in 1997 and embraced other genres, b/c I knew it was downhill from there on out for country. (and I kept my country past a secret until one day going skiing in CO, when I belted out every word of a Trisha cd, good times, shocking my friend)…

Anyway, moving on. Have you eaten a Moe’s bagel yet? I heart them. And more importantly, when are you taking your runner’s booty to my state?

Oh, I love 90s country music. So much. And I love the line about “lonely sweetness” and “quiet possibility.” So, so true.
