“The Undoing”

blog

It feels strange to not be writing here.

When I don’t write, I’m reminded that this blog was born out of a need in me, for myself, and not really for anyone else.  I can’t not write.  I think I have to, as a part of being the truest version of myself.

But I haven’t been writing here. And I’ll admit, I’m not feeling much like myself these days.

But here’s a new song, recorded yesterday with a stuffy nose, super lo-fi style in the living room.  It gives a glimpse into these days, the days when it’s difficult to write anything else.

Thanks for hanging in there with me.

[Song has been taken down – maybe you’ll hear it some other time.]

I am reminded of David James Duncan’s words in “River Teeth, (Paraphrased) “The great thing about falling apart is that when you are in pieces on the ground you can’t help but be honest with yourself, and others”

What a beautiful song! You never cease to amaze and inspire me. Being of a certain age, I recommend to you the work of St. Jackson Browne, specifically “Hold On, Hold Out.” Hold on, Annie Parsons, and “This above all: to thine own self be true.”

I’m sitting in front of a blinking cursor. Just as your silent blog reminds us, sometimes there are not the right words. Or they are simply drowned out in the flood. I have tasted bitterness, I have fallen from the ledge you describe, and in some small way perhaps I have an inkling of your sadness. Sometimes we need our arms, thrown open to the world, to help us tread water. And girl, yo biceps gonna look good when you done! Hang in, dear one.

“But maybe the one who’s been broken, then healed
Is more graced than the one who’s just ‘well.'” Wow. Thanks for this.

Beautiful song, Annie. First you fall and are broken, then you get up and are healed- both are the mercy of God. Thank you for the reminder. “Where you stumble and fall, there you will find pure gold.”

You have me tearing up at my desk. Channel your grief, Annie. The best writing comes from the darkest depths. At least you’re living, you liver you.

    Love you.

I agree with everyone’s comments, thank you for sharing this. I’ve had life fall apart on me more times than I would have ever expected and looks like they are heading that way again. I do feel stronger after, and I do feel held up by grace. Still it sucks. I love how you put such poetic words to that precariousness of our lives. I, on the other hand, become speechless. You and your family have been on my mind. A LOT. And I have been keeping all of you in my prayers.
