Trail food

blog

This is the week! I leave on Saturday to hoof it across this beautiful state on the Colorado Trail. I am wrapping up details at work, trying to get my roof repaired (this is cutting it very close), writing out instructions for those taking care of Foxy, and triple checking my packing list.

The most complicated piece of the planning has been one of two things: arranging for food drops, or planning the food itself. Neither thing is completely ironed out yet – but I’m getting close on the food plan. It’s been awhile since I talked at you, so I made a video.

You are like a hiking astronaut! Love seeing your beautiful face live, but I am seriously concerned about the no VIA. Best check your mailbox. :) Just add to your hot chocolate for an instant mocha. Much much love to you on this adventure…..xoxo

Annie Cranny! That totally made me chuckle. Praying for an awesome adventure!

Those look like pretty smart calories. Love the dehydrated dinners! I say follow Mrs. Chesney’s advice up there and grab a few VIA’s and add them to your hot cocoa. They are phenomenal. I took them to Ethiopia with me thinking they’d save my life… and duh, forgot that Ethiopia has the best coffee on the planet! But anyway, I use them at work because they insist on the cheap Folger’s stuff – being a non-profit and all.

So…let me join what I’m sure are the throngs of people who are more than just a little bit jealous of your upcoming adventure! Food choices look good…and honestly, even though I think GU products are pretty nasty, they have caffeine…free, unsolicited tip :).

    what an adventure!
have you been weening yourself off coffee? caffeine withdrawal headaches can be such a bummer.
will be thinking of you often and wishing you an awesome time.

Pop tarts – the poor man’s powerbar:)

And I can’t believe you are going with tuna nar-nar. (The name we gave it as guides). Ramen is a good evening warmer and electrolyte/sodium replenisher.

If you hit BV/Salida and decide coffee should be back on the menu, a small trail french press and ground bean can turn your day from meh to marvelous. Just sayin.
Coffee and a nice down jacket were my two luxury items I never regretted.

So excited for you Annie!! Being a Seattleite and caffeine addict myself if I may suggest… bring along a few chocolate covered coffee beans (or the VIAs) just in case you decide you want/need/got to have some caffeine.

Yay! I can’t believe that you start your hike this weekend! I’m so excited for you and can’t wait to read about your adventures. Are you picking up food at post office stops along the way or carrying it all with you?

LOVE this. You are the cutest.

And – I echo the comments above about the coffee. DON’T GO COFFEE-LESS! You’ll regret it.

Someone mentioned caffeine withdrawal! That’s what I came here to do, because – it is a real thing. It doesn’t have one of those “the more you know” commercials, but it is a real thing that happens. I recommend not drinking caffeine starting now, so you can have your “i really really really want to die” headaches on Thursday/Friday, and then you’ll be fine. Can’t wait to read about your trip.

Via IN the hot cocoa??!?!? This is a revelation to me – and so, so smart. Thanks for pointing me toward the light, all!

You are the cutest, truly. Yes, beware of bad headaches related to caffeine withdrawal! It happens. Other than that, I support your backpacking on a budget choices. I ate oatmeal for breakfast on the trail, with fancy instant coffee (that stuff in the tins…it probably no longer exists, but it was caffeine and sugary goodness). Lunch was mostly snacks, but I like your tuna idea, along with the bars and mix. Evening meals are important. I ate lots of pasta meals from pouches…easy to cook on a backpacking stove, two servings, you’ll eat all of it…and you need to. You will be a rockin’ hard-body when you finish the trail, with a hella fine backside, lol. That was your phrase, I do believe, from your first year in Denver. Can’t wait to hear all about it! I believe in you, too!

Also, would kind of love to see a map of your hiking route. Not very familiar w/the Colorado terrain, but just think that would be interesting to see :). Looking forward to photos/stories.

Love that you made a food video! We were destined to be friends. The dehydrated meals reminded me of when I canoed the Boundary Waters several years ago. Good memories! I’m excited to hear all about your trip. You are my hero!
