DeLurking Day… late

blog

In my hours upon hours of exploring the hinterlands of the World Wide Web, I recently made a grave realization: I missed a very important day. A day celebrated by bloggers worldwide. A day which changes lives, reveals secrets, and promotes honesty… that is, for those who remembered it.

10 days ago, I missed DeLurking Day.

See? Someone even took the time to make a little graphic. Of a man with a frightening grin opening his trenchcoat to flash the world.

Well, Internet, that is what I would like for you to do for me. Flash away.

Tell me who you are! Tell me a little about yourself! For just this one day, delurk – then you can slip back into your shrouded anonymity, I promise. Even if I already know you, say hi. And if you’re going to try to pretend like you don’t read this blog and just walk away quietly, don’t fool yourself: I watch StatCounter like a hawk. I know you’re here.

To get the ball rolling, I’ll ask you a question: what is your favorite hoofed creature? Mine is the horse, followed closely by Mr. Tumnus.

Okay, and if that one didn’t satisfy, here’s another question option: do you have any recurring dreams? I do. As of late, I have been dreaming of three things: dogs, running, and vampires. All three things braid together in the strangest ways.

Fine, one more: if you could be any pop star for one glittering, spangled performance, who would it be? Whitney Houston, without a doubt. And I would be singing “I Have Nothing,” complete with the key change.

If you hate all of those questions and would rather tell me something random, like how many wild goats you think you could take in a fight, or your favorite flavor of syrup, or why you’re choosing to not delurk (haHA, I caught you!), by all means… Maybe I will choose my favorite comment and send a prize pack. When I get my next paycheck.

Happy delurking. I may be late, but at least I’m fashionably so.

Ha! I’m a StatCounter fiend as well.

I’ve enjoyed your blog off and on for a little while, but only have been subscribed for a few weeks now. Fun writing! Keep it up!

I couldn’t come up with answers to your questions. So, if I could go anywhere in the world this weekend, I would go to Cairo and see the pyramids.

Hoofed creature?? You want to know my favorite hoofed creature??

    Well.

Babe, the Gallant Pig, I suppose.

Oh, and, um– I read your blog all the time.

  4. hollyandmeagan on January 22, 2009 at 10:18 AM

favorite hoofed creature: that’s a no -brainer. the unicorn. ridable, magical and probably purple.

relinquishing all attempts to sound uncreepy, I appreciate your honesty in the pen, nay keyboard.

I’m pretty sure I could take on a handful of wild goats – but only if they came one at a time…if they start coming at me in pairs, I’m pretty sure I’d be screwed.

(and as a fellow desk dweller w/ little to do at work, I read your blog daily).

    Fellow Annie, here!

    Love your blog.

Love white-tailed deer. They are the lurkers all around my house, graceful and captivating.

I’m a regular stalker of the Annies. You two are hilarious and awesome at the same time. Hilawesome? Maybe? Not working? Ok.

And lately I’ve been dreaming about weddings and funerals. Yikes.

Oh, and I think I’d like to be Alicia Keyes. Oh, to play the piano and sing like that.

    Hello Miss Annie!

I read your blog everyday, sometimes twice if work is super boring.

Moose are my favorite hoofed animal. Mostly because they don’t have a plural form. Also because I saw my first one on Saturday and they’re huge.

I frequently dream about sledding. I must want to be five again.

I’d be Hannah Montana. Daughter of Billy Ray, need I say more?

  11. Hemphills on January 22, 2009 at 11:27 AM

Favorite flavor of syrup: iHop’s Butterpecan. It’s life changing.

  12. Emily on January 22, 2009 at 11:27 AM

What is StatCounter? I think I should know about it.

Your questions are hard! No reoccurring dreams, though I did dream I was attacked by a giant spider last night. Ugh.

I’m a fan of mountain goats and I really have no desire, not even in a small, small section of my heart or brain, to be a pop star. That might be a nightmare for me.

  13. rachel on January 22, 2009 at 11:32 AM

Your blog came up in my Google Reader as one that I might enjoy. And I must admit that I have read most of your old posts (I am a secretary at a camp and it’s a bit slow this time of year …). I really enjoy your writing style.

My favorite hoofed creature would probably be something exotic like a giraffe or a zebra. Anything else just seems so boring …

My favorite hoofed creature is probably the Menator. Pretty sweet creature. If I could play a show as one Pop star…it’d have to be Gavin DeGraw. I dig the voice and people go nuts at his shows. Also, he’s friendly.

I like goats that could mow a lawn on a steep hill by grazing. I dream about being somewhere looking for my shoes because somehow along the way I lost them. I would be Elvis in a moment to be captured on black velvet. I’ve been reading your blog since the conversation of you not having shingles in the trailor. I was excited for you. Peace out.

i used to dream all the time about being attacked by savage native americans. my high school theatre teacher told me it was because i hadn’t gone through my cherokee rights of passage.

i’m totally with you on whitney. i used to sing ‘i have nothing’ in the shower as a tween all the time.

  18. Jodie on January 22, 2009 at 12:08 PM

I am not a lurker by any stretch — but I’ll play along just the same. :)

    (1) the unicorn. It’s awesomeness is totally awesome. [And I do love Mr. Tumnus, too. He’s pretty rad.]

I would definitely be Beyonce for a day. For sure.

    See you soon!

ha, i must have missed delurking day too.

what is your favorite hoofed creature?

    the centaurs from harry potter!

and i work a boring desk job too. i feel your pain (and joy, on those late nights out when you know you won’t have to use much brain power the next morning at work)

    Statcounter? Where have I been??

    Anyway to the important questions:

    1) Water Buffalo
    2) Recurring dreams? Yes..pregnancy, which I was told means the birth of new thoughts….which I am thoroughly embracing.
    3) Chris Brown at 2007 MTV’s Video Music Awards…which made J.T. feel like an old man. Snap!

  23. Sarah D on January 22, 2009 at 12:37 PM

Hi Annie, I appreciate your call for transparency, so I thought I better do my part. I read your blog every day – I found you through my friends Ginger & Valerie. I know I should be reading the news or otherwise sharpening the dull edges of my mind, but your honesty and humor pull me in every day.

My favorite hoofed creature is probably the donkey in Shrek. I don't usually remember my dreams, and I would love to be Bono. He is an amazing musician and I admire his conviction.

    Have a great day,
    Sarah D.

  24. Lindsey on January 22, 2009 at 1:50 PM

    Hey Annie!

I would have to say my reoccurring dream is one of the following:
    ~late for class
    ~can’t find the classroom
~or somehow missed most of the semester and I’m trying to make up for it at the end
~And another one would be where I am trying to walk or run and I can’t seem to move my legs (Freaky! I know!)

So there you go! I do enjoy reading your blog. It helps break up my long work days to hop over to see what your thoughts are for the day.

  25. Anonymous on January 22, 2009 at 2:01 PM

Annie you called me out, now i have to comment!!
My favorite hoofed creature may have to be the goat. When I was 8 my family went to the petting zoo and a baby goat ate half my sock, which I was wearing. I was actually really excited it chose be, because clearly, it would only eat the sock of a truly awesome human being!

Hm, I used to always have dreams set in my church, and it would change into something else. Once it was my friend’s house, once it was a gym and my friend was the aerobics instructor.

I have been reading your blog for a couple months now, and God has really used your writing Annie. I hope you are enjoying hearing from your silent lurkers.
(Let me also add i am currently an avid listener of your newest song, its quite applicable to me right now)

Sometimes I wonder if you and Allie and Cameron think I’m a crazy stalker-type when you look at your stats and see that I check your blogs 10-20 times a day. I have an explanation though, and it’s not that I’m obsessive compulsive. There are only so many things you can do in 30 second chunks of time, which is about what I have between kids asking for help on long division, asking if “her” is a possessive pronoun adjective or a possessive noun adjective, or if they can get a drink or use the restroom for the 17th time before lunch. Thus, the abundant 30 sec visits to your blog.

I’m a little scared to answer the goat question because that is the kind of information that can come back to bite you someday. I think it might be one of my online banking security questions, and afraid my response might spur a recurring dream involving herds of angry goats. So it will have to remain a mystery.

The pop/rock star is easy though – Liam Gallagher. I have a thing for tambourines.

I wonder if a tambourine could scare off a couple dozen rabid goats?

    Or 4th graders? Hmmmmmm.

  27. Andrea on January 22, 2009 at 2:50 PM

I have encountered a large wild goat on the top of Courthouse Mountain, and I just have to say that I wouldn’t attempt to take even one! He was angry, pawing at the ground, and VERY intimidating!

  28. Tad on January 22, 2009 at 3:23 PM

    1) I’m with you on the Horses and MR. Tumnus. Although Springboks are really cool too (Yes I spelled it right. They’re found in S. Africa).

    2) I have a dream every now and again that I’m in the Lord of the Rings Story. I know that’s really nerdy, but if you could see the feats of strength and courage there in, you wouldn’t think it nerdy.

    3) I’d love to be Andrea Boccelli (except not blind) and sing a duet with you. Ha Ha. Being Andrea Boccelli for a day would be awesome though.

  29. Megan on January 22, 2009 at 4:14 PM

Hi Annie! I'm Megan, 25, live in Denver. I found your blog one day when reading Hope's blog. She referenced your blog's reference to FailBlog – I have been addicted to them both ever since. I love reading your thoughts!

I am a big dreamer. Over the course of years I have had reoccurring dream settings. For instance, a specific house & a specific airport. Neither of which have I ever been to or seen in real life – but in my dreams I know them so well. I only dream about them maybe 1-2 times a year, but I find out more about the place each time I do. Pretty weird, huh?

Anyhow – thanks for your wit, humor, honesty, and entertainment!

Okay, so I’ve commented a couple times (still laughing about the communion post), but I think I’m still a lurker. I’m sure we’ve never met, but traveled in many of the same UPC circles (I’m SIL to Kate and Ryan Maxwell).

Um… my recurring dream is that my son is out of bed and about to fall down the stairs because we didn’t shut the baby gate before going to bed. This is insane because he sleeps in a crib behind a closed door that he is not tall enough to open.

Ah, it feels good to be known. Now I can link to you on my own blog and stop pretending I don’t read yours every day at work.

Annie, I was reading your blog everyday, but in the shuffle of moving back to San Diego I missed about two weeks. I am trilled to say I’m all got up now! I may get a headache from all the jerky dance moves and massively large earrings, but Beyonce. :) Just for a day…that would be cool..
    Love your blog!

  32. Anonymous on January 22, 2009 at 5:13 PM

    okay, here goes (commence delurking):

1.) favorite hoofed animal? I kind-of like hippos; no one can be self-conscious around those babes (and they even swim without wrapping up in 3 layers of thigh/belly/arm coverage… I love it)
2.) reoccuring dream? It is a tie between the one where I am running (usually from cops who are really ‘bad guys’ – don’t ask) and ones with people from high school in them (yes, you have been in my dreams before and we always end-up at that bagel place that made the BEST sandwiches…mmmmmm)
    3.)pop star? Kylie Minogue
4.)goats? 3 (I have some pretty firm data on this one)
5.)syrup? uh, um, huh. I don’t know – will get back to you *smiles*

    Consider yourself *FLASHED*

Hello! I think I’m more like a half-time lurker. I can’t remember your questions, already… hoofed creature (gazelle, b/c it sounds pretty)… yeah, can’t remember the others. I love your blog, though, Annie.

  34. Ginger on January 22, 2009 at 5:36 PM

I don’t like hoofed animals or creatures. Truth be told, I’m not much of an animal person. If I am forced to select I would choose a centaur, preferably one that is friendly towards humans.

I generally can’t remember my dreams, but the other night I had a very vivid conversation with Lauren Poole and Bobby Bailey from Invisible Children. We’ve never met, but I’m hopeful.

Also, I would like to be Bono. Apparently Sarah and I think alike.

I think I’ve delurked before. I have no clever answers to your questions. But here’s a few really random things about me.

I hate HATE celery. The sight, the smell, the sound, the texture…it is pure evil.

My favorite commercial of all time is the one several years ago – when picture phones were new – and Little Richard went bowling. “Who took a picture of Little Richard?” I laugh out loud just thinking about it.

  38. Whitney on January 22, 2009 at 6:27 PM

I found your blog through a series of clicks on other blogs and felt some sort of kinship in your words, so let the delurking begin.

    1. It has taken me nearly 22 years to admit this, but I just don’t really like animals. So, hoofed or not, unless it has some sort of magical characteristic, like not smelling, or talking, or turning everything it touched into a tasty margarita, I’d just rather not.

    2. I never dream about ending up somewhere naked, but I do always dream about forgetting to wear my shoes. That and back when I was a waitress, the restaurant I worked in had some very distinct red bowls that crop up in my dreams at random.

    3. I don’t know that she qualifies as a pop star, but I’d love to be Kate Nash and sing cheeky things in a British accent. Or at least the song “Foundations.”

Well, I suppose that’s all, except to say, I take it back. I don’t think I’d enjoy a magical animal that could talk. Just one that doesn’t smell and could turn things into margaritas.

    Sincerley from OKC,
    Whitney

Why I won’t delurk: see you tomorrow.

  40. Paul on January 22, 2009 at 6:45 PM

Favorite hoofed (hooved?) creature: Seabiscuit. (underdog WINS!)

Recurring dream: can’t find something important, and I keep trying over and over and it never happens.

Pop star: Bono, singing “Walk On” at the end of the 2001 Boston Garden “Elevation” concert. Omigosh.

  41. erin on January 22, 2009 at 6:50 PM

how’s that for some creepiness up there?? I delurked a LOOOONNG time ago, and a beautiful friendship was born. Oh, and PS: LT and PV are pretty regular now. Have i said too much?

and my recurring dreams involve me, you, some good music, some good….whiskey? and, okay, i guess some other people too. wait a minute…that was my day dream. mmmmkay, now who’s the creepy one?

  42. luke on January 22, 2009 at 7:18 PM

i make 40! that’s a lot of comments. happy de-lurking day. though i could have gotten by–sneaky google reader.

random fact: there is a giant trash can in our hallway right now blocking my roommates door–an outdoor take to the curb rolling trash can to be exact. i could tell the story but the mystery is more exciting.

  43. Zak and Dev on January 22, 2009 at 9:00 PM

Hi Annie! I am a guilty lurker, I read your blog nearly every day, but rarely comment and tell you how much I love it. So… I have never really thought of my favorite hoofed creature, but I would probably have to say a horse as well. I have MANY recurring dreams, mostly nightmares unfortunately. Most frequently I dream of falling off curbs and wake up with a start, or I dream of being late for something and searching desperately for my shoes, my keys, or some other necessity. I’m not gonna lie, I would ABSOLUTELY be Shakira. Well, I love your blog Annie, thanks for writing so faithfully. Now I am going to go learn all about your other lurkers!

  44. Valerie on January 22, 2009 at 9:18 PM

MAN!!! Ginger totally took my centaur answer!

Well anyway, my reasons for the centaur are two fold:

1)They are in that gorgeous sequence in Fantastia with the flowers and cupids and all things lovely.
    2)Harry Potter.

Annie, I have loved your blog for ages and ages and also ages. I have told a lot of people about your blog. When you friended me on Facebook I freaked out a little bit because you seemed kind of like an internet celebrity.

My favorite entries of yours are the eyelash-pulling-out story, the bra underwire story, the good-better-best entry (“world peace and everyone gets cake!”), and K is for Kaleidoscope. Don’t know why included all that, but there you go!

Okay, this is ridiculously long. And I realize I sound just a little crazy, but I think there’s no more fitting way to end this comment than by saying: “You are my biggest fan.”

  45. kristen on January 22, 2009 at 9:19 PM

    Confession:
I make silly excuses for why this does not qualify as blog-stalking. Any number of degrees of separation. But I’m close with Genny! But I’ve been to Jeremy and Ashley’s house for a party for Genny! But my sister Mara loves your sister Sarah!

Still, we haven’t met, so consider me delurked. Back to anonymity I go!

  46. Annie Peterson on January 22, 2009 at 9:32 PM

There must be multiple de-lurking days, because I did one just a few months ago…not long enough to be de-lurk day ’08.

I’m glad to say I de-lurked myself on your blog a long time ago! =)

  47. Deborah Barnett on January 22, 2009 at 9:41 PM

I’m late in the day checking in… but I’m a regular responder anyway. But to answer one of your questions… I could take on a whole herd of wild goats. One click of my camera and they would scatter across the plains. I, unfortunately, have already proven this… much to the chagrin of the poor Kenyan shepherd boy who was tending said herd.

    Oh the humility.

  48. giving up slowly on January 22, 2009 at 10:05 PM

    1. I would agree with horses. But I really want a lab puppy someday!

    2. Two of my weirdest (and most vivid) dreams were a) being pregnant and b) being kidnapped, strapped with chains and being dragged behind a car…

    3. Right now.. Carrie Underwood!

I’ve admitted this to many others…its about time you knew: I’m a secret blog stalker of yours. Yikes- that felt really creepy to write. Anyway, yep, I LOVE reading your blog – and it feels kinda funny b/c I don’t know you very well…but I won’t hide any longer: I’m a big fan Annie! Ah, phew, that felt good. Perhaps I’ll even start commenting on future posts, now that the secret is out… :)
