We are 12 days away from the dreaded transition to digital TV – although it’s not so much of a “transition” as it is a “bitch slap.” A belly-flop straight into the lavas of hell.

No, I did not purchase a converter box. It’s not that worth it to me. But I will miss my morning news shows – because what better way to wake up than with Diane and Robin, Chris and Sam? I could always go downstairs to our gigantic television of ungodly proportions, the one that’s hooked up to the cable signal. But in the morning, I prefer watching my tiny screen in the privacy of my Princess Tower Bedroom – in which there is no cable cord.

I have 12 more days of bliss.

This morning, I flipped from “Good Morning America” (my favorite) to “The Today Show” (my not-as-favorite, but more-favorite than “The Early Show”) just in time to see this story about Patrick Thibodeau. I bawled my eyes out. Involuntary crying. Not just hot eyes – HUGE crocodile tears spilling down my cheeks. Some things are just like that for me – I cannot, no matter how hard I try, keep it together.

Other things I cannot watch without crying:
– The last 10 minutes of “Homeward Bound”
– The final scene in any inspirational Disney sports movie (“Remember the Titans,” “Miracle,” “The Rookie”)
– Any movie that ends in the wild-animal-become-pet being returned to the wild
– The Oprah episode in which she reunites the long-separated Rwandan family
– Kerri Strug sticking the landing
– And as much as it pains me to admit it… “MOVE! THAT! BUS!!”

– – – – – – –

And now – the moment you’ve all been waiting for! Drumroll, please…

And the winner is:

My 8th comment was left by hollyandmeagan, but who’s to say whether it was Holly or Meagan? Whichever one of you borrows her roommate/bestfriend/co-blogger’s underwear, get ready for a beautiful Valentine made by Anna Marie. You should probably give it to your roommate/bestfriend/co-blogger.

actually, I think you have a reprieve until June 12…the Senate passed a bill last week, the House this week, and the President is probably going to sign it soon…

so you have 4 more months of crying yourself awake in the morning:

i wouldnt get TOO excited about having 4 more months. the ‘delay’ is optional. many stations plan to go ahead with the switch on the 17th as planned. many of them have already contracted to have there old analog equipment dismantled or sold on feb 18th.

I cry when Ariel gets turned into a human at the end of the Little Mermaid. She’s leaving her father and will not be able to bring her kids under the water to meet him and visit his house. I remember thinking this in 2nd grade. Very sad. Many tears.

  7. Annie Parsons on February 5, 2009 at 12:00 PM

OMG Ginger, I’m obsessed with you.

Hi Annie! I am so glad I’m not alone crying at the Today Show. I, too, cried at that story. The bad thing was I was on my way out the door to work, so my teary eyes became frozen when I went outside and my mascara was a mess. But it was an AMAZING story! When they lifted him up at the end I lost it all over again.

My roommate Meaghan calls extreme makeover home edition my, "Cry Show". "Deb, your Cry Show is on – hurry!"

I also cry at Biggest Loser every week. Sheesh. I once watched Biggest Loser and Extreme Home Makeover back-to-back… I was a wreck.

And I love how Hitoshi & Duane took you on a nice roller coaster of emotion… when your day already started out that way. Nice.

Ps… for some reason I'm highly amused that my Word verification is "mishi" It made me giggle

I think you can get a converter box for free…can’t you?

  12. rachel on February 5, 2009 at 1:33 PM

    MOVE!THAT!BUS! gets me everytime!

My other shame? OnStar commericials, when the baby is locked in the car. I don’t even need to see the picture – I hear it on the radio and my chest gets all tight, my eyes start to well, and my cheeks scrunch up trying to stop myself.

  13. THE PARSONS on February 5, 2009 at 1:54 PM

um. I was going to type a comment. then I got distracted by the fact that my word verification word was SPERM!!!!!!! OMG!!

  18. duane on February 5, 2009 at 4:52 PM

okay – ill admit it. the inspirational sports movies get me too. remember the titans is brutal. so good. but brutal.

  19. Tad on February 5, 2009 at 6:43 PM

I too teared up at the end of “Titans” and “Miracle”. “Rudy” too. Also the end of “Saving Private Ryan”, when Pvt Ryan is old and visiting the graves of the men who died for him, and sking his wife if he lead a life good enough to honor their sacrifice.

P.S. My word is “lartic”. Mine are never interesting.

  20. erin on February 5, 2009 at 6:56 PM

oh how i miss you. can i come hang in july? It will be hot, and awful (remember last summer?!!) but i have a month off.

  21. Anastasia Watson on February 5, 2009 at 9:58 PM

I completely lose it every time I watch:

    1. Christmas Folger’s Commercials: When “son” comes home from the army and surprises “mom” on Christmas morning!

    2. PS I Love You: When she finally breaks down and says, “I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe” because you know how suffocating that feeling must be!

  22. Case and Los on February 5, 2009 at 10:16 PM

These comments are hilarious. I cry extra at Extreme Makeover being prego, I pretty much cry the hold hour. So annoying. I tell Los I hate the show b/c it makes me cry so much. But then I can’t stay away… Watch out when you are prego! I also cry at most Disney movies and ALL animal movies and “motivational” sports movies… (not to mention chick flicks, holy cow). Waterworks indeed. p.s. with a MacBook, why do you need a tv? We just watch it online on our MacBook! Screw the box.

  23. duane on February 5, 2009 at 10:19 PM

ahhhh!! RUDY! i well up with tears on that one every time.

  24. AnnieBlogs on February 5, 2009 at 10:54 PM

All I’m saying is that episode of Oprah is one of the most moving things ON EARTH.

  25. bec on February 6, 2009 at 12:28 AM

sometimes i cry when i watch animal planet and see a dog doing something really cool. like agility. or frisbee stunts.

that has to be the nerdiest of them all.

i don’t know if it’s because that’s something i would love to be able to do really well or because i just really love seeing dogs at their peak potential.

  26. Allie, Dearest on February 6, 2009 at 7:43 AM

I loved the women’s gymnastics team of the Atlanta days. I was obsessed with them. These later teams don’t have the same excitement for me (not that I don’t watch it like it’s the only thing on tv, bc I do).

I cry when Extreme Home Makeover first starts, as soon as the video clips introduce the family. It’s always so desperate, you know–mom had three of her legs and four of her arms removed after getting cancer when she was saving lives at a war clinic while adopting 25 refugee orphans who also have no limbs…now their roof is falling in, etc.

I sob at King Kong, from the moment they tranquilize him on the island to when he’s up on the building, sheltering Naomi Watts, while getting pelted with rounds of ammunition from brave fighter pilots. It always seems just like Jesus walking the road to Golgotha for us, and I’m a mess.

Umm, and how about the Thai Insurance commercials…

  27. Tad on February 6, 2009 at 1:48 PM

What maeks me cry on Extreme Home Makeover, is the realization that half of the families can’t afford to stay in their new awesome palaces bc the new house has a way higher value and they can’t pay the property taxes.

Oh well, it makes for good TV.

  28. Case and Los on February 6, 2009 at 3:42 PM

“Well I heard” (said in my best southern voice) that the show pays off the house for the fam, b/c that was a question I had too, and subsidizes their utilities. Not sure if that’s true…
p.s. I wanted to mention that in March, in my hometown of Fresno, CA, an episode of Extreme Makeover will feature a fam there. It was recorded last month and over 3,000 volunteers came to do it. Just wanted to get that on your radar:)

  29. Rebecca on February 9, 2009 at 12:18 AM

Seriously, I am a sucker for “Extreme Home Makeover” and a certain boy made fun of me the first time I watched it with him – but soon he learned that I needed a box of kleenix if we were watching it. Ha! I’m also a sucker for Hallmark commercials.

[…] Thank you for your feedback, ladies!  Emily, Kristy, and Erin, I’m sorry to report that I listened to the majority, played it safe, and can still ponytail it.  I’ll save the next chop-fest for some cataclysmic day, like when TV goes digital. […]
