Track 1: “Make a Mess”
Welcome to EP release week here on the old blog! For each of the next 7 days, I’m going to tell you a little something about a song from the project. It’s like VH1’s “Behind the Music,” but without the heroin.
So feel free to listen each day – and then, if you feel so inclined, order your own copy of “Wish That I Was” – because I now have an ONLINE STORE! I’ll get your copy to the post office post haste.
“Make a Mess”
Crushes are such sweet agony, such fluttery torture – and “Make a Mess” is my small attempt at catching the feeling.
I knew that I wanted this song to be the first track on the EP, and it was important to me that it feel simple, warm, and organic. I think that Josh captured it perfectly – earthy and unpolished and welcoming – my favorite kind of country music, the kind that could easily be replicated in a live setting. Um, like a barn.
Meg Allison and I split the background parts, and I love what we came up with during the bridge. Have I mentioned that I love singing background parts far more than lead vocals? Sometimes, I think that I write songs just so I’ll have something to sing harmonies for.
This track has been deleted – you should buy the EP to hear it!

annie. this is really, very, lovely. so very lovely. beautiful.
There is a heroine here…..Just sayin’
her⋅o⋅ine
/ˈhɛroʊɪn/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [her-oh-in]
–noun
1. a woman of distinguished courage or ability, admired for her brave deeds and noble qualities.
2. the principal female character in a story, play, film, etc.
Uh, well now. THAT’S embarrassing. I CAN’T EVEN SPELL HEROIN! That is getting fixed immediately.
But still, Chet – thanks. :)
very pretty, very sweet. bravo annie p.
HA HA HA, I was going to say without the heroin but WITH a heroine…
Love it! So beautiful.
I might listen to country if more of it sounded like this. When the carpet guys were working in our place last week they had a country station blaring and I haven’t been able to get the line, “My eyebrows ain’t plucked, I got a gun in my truck” out of head all weekend. This song cured me! Thanks!
so! cool! i’m a long-time reader, first-time commenter, but i just had to say that i’m really excited for you! i hope to purchase your album soon- my husband and i don’t listen to much country-type music, but you have a beautiful voice and i’m all about supporting fellow artists. :)
“Like a barn.”
… Or like an antique store with a picking party headed up by two older gentlemen with a guitar and banjo. Remember that? You joined in on harmonies with one of their old hymns and it was magical. :)
So proud of you. Can’t wait to order my copy!!
Good work, Annie Parsons. I’m not much on country music, but I always enjoy your songs. I like that you’re going to tell us a bit about some of the songs. That’s really cool.
“Sweet agony” and “fluttery torture”! You craft words so wonderfully, dear Annie!
I just mistyped my name and can correct it! That is painful!
So pretty! Can’t wait to order a copy!
And I have to admit, I really enjoyed the harmonies in this song.
Guess what? GUESS WHAT, ANNIE?! I just bought your EP! I’m at work and I don’t have speakers on this stupid computer, but it doesn’t matter because I know all 7 songs are going to be fantastic! Like a really fantastic barn with a loft and a kitten that lives there! I don’t even like cats. But a kitten in a barn is kinda fantastic! Ship mine first, ok?
“It’s like VH1’s “Behind the Music,” but without the heroin.” – speak for yourself.. =)
nice track.
So excited! Can’t wait to get my copy! You’re so talented, Annie.
So excited for you Annie! Couldn’t wait to get home and listen and order your EP!
Oh Annie – I’m so proud of you. I want 10 copies but can’t figure out this dang computer ordering stuff. Can you help me??
