Assumption

blog

The kindest thing that anyone could ever do for me would be to do my taxes*.

As of this weekend, that makes my dad the nicest person on the planet.

But here’s a word to the wise, my friends: do not just assume that you are going to get a tax refund, and then go out and order a brand new, gigantic couch, assuming that the purchase will be partially reimbursed once April 15 rolls around.

Oh no.  Never assume.

For the first time in my life, I owe.

And speaking of assumptions,

the root of “assumption” is “assume,”
the root of “consumption” is “consume,”
the root of “resumption” is “resume,”
the root of “presumption” is “presume.”

The root of “gumption” is… no, it’s not.

WHY DO I LOVE STUFF LIKE THIS SO MUCH?  pleasebemyfriend.

You do know what happens when you make assumptions. Right?

gume (v. intr.) – to build up one’s courage or resolve for action

usage: “Dude, you just gotta gume up and ask her out on a date.”

So words. I just read a word that I’ve never seen before in an Erosion Control Manual, riveting reading beeteedub.

Denude. Dictionary states that it means to make naked or bare, strip. Shouldn’t it be the opposite. De-ice means to remove the ice. So shouldn’t denude mean to clothe?

but, of course–a neologism just for you, Annie. it’s your belated half-birthday gift.

This might be WHY we are such good friends.

You know what else drives me crazy?
Apart: means to be separated from something.
A part: means to be included in something.

And people mix them up ALL THE TIME. I don’t blame them necessarily– it’s silly to have two such closely related words mean such opposite things. But still. (Maddening.)

I like you. And all things vocabulary. My mom and I used to make a list of words in high school like, one can be overwhelmed, or underwhelmed, but are you ever just whelmed… and stuff like that. (I know I was really cool)

And if you need to be cheered up, watch the video I just posted.

The first year Scott’s dad did our taxes, we owed so much he was appalled at whoever provided us our withholding advice… it was him. The professional tax acccountant. Cheers up: you can’t “owe” if you don’t “make” in the first place.

There’s not much out there that feels worse than filling out your taxes and discovering that after all the money Uncle Sam took from you already, you still owe him more. It feels like you’re paying into a protection racket.

We owe this year too! FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER! AARGH.

But I like the above comment about you can’t owe if you don’t make. True, very true.

Can someone please rub my shoulders too?
