Off the grid

blog

On Saturday afternoon, just after discovering some sort of maggot larvae undulating in my bottle of cumin (do you have any idea how long I’ve waited for the opportunity to use the word “undulate” – and how this horrifying experience totally wasn’t worth the satisfaction?), I deactivated my Facebook account.

I am trying to give my spirit a fighting chance at being still.  It’s amazing to me how unaccepted that is in today’s culture.  But Facebook felt like it was adding to the noise and clutter in my mind, and is, thus, worthy of a hiatus at the very least.  That’s about all the explanation I am willing to give.

I am just now realizing that this means no one will get a reminder that my birthday is coming up.

WORLD: MY BIRTHDAY IS COMING UP.

I know that I’ll reactivate it sometime relatively soon(ish), but until then, if you want to find me, you know how.

When IS your birthday Annie? BTW, I admire your experiment with creating some stillness in your life. Is that a good word? Experimenting? I am completely non-commital about things, so I experiment all the time. Feels less serious, or something.

For the record, I think you are fab.

Yeah, I’d like to know when your birthday is too. We don’t want to miss it.

BTW, I think you’re making a smart move with the Facebook thing. I was on for a while and it got to be too much to keep up with.

As long as you don’t deactivate your blog, I can keep on getting up for work in the morning…

I like it when you write. :)

Good for you! I suppose this can be like your periodic fasts from anything with alcohol. FB can be a source of a lot of useless static.

I hope you let us know when your birthday is, so we can wish you happy birthday and tell you how awesome you are. Oh wait, it doesn’t have to be your birthday to tell you you’re awesome.

    You are awesome Annie Parsons!

Bravo, Annie! And yes, I agree with Marijke. As long as you don’t stop the blogging, cutoffs from other internet stuff is dandy with me. :)

    And happy early birthday!

I told Drew that you’d deactivated your Facebook and he said, “Isn’t that, like, your favorite hobby though? Messaging with Annie on Facebook?”

I’m happy you’re giving yourself a rest. I’m looking forward to the reactivation.

Will call you soon– the wedding was fantastic. I am WIPED.

I have only commented a few times and usually just lurk…but,

I had to tell you that I deactivated Facebook the beginning of the summer – like really quit by deleting all of my friends. It was quite a moment when those dreaded words came up “You have ZERO friends”. I had tried to just deactivate before, but only lasted a few days (or hours).

When FB was gone for good I felt like I was coming off of an addiction…and a week later I all of a sudden had all this free time!

Anyway, enjoy your journey towards a bit more stillness in your life…

I had to search your blog to find out what happened to your fb. Good for you. I can’t quit the addiction right now :)

By the way everyone, Annie’s birthday is August 4, one day before my dad’s and 6 days before mine :)

Can’t wait to see you next week!! (I love the sound of that)

  10. […] to mention, I work with some very wonderful people (SHOUT OUT, Emma!).  So, heigh-ho. –    The Facebook fast is going well, and is enabling me to have somewhat of a “soul sabbatical.”  I was worried that […]
