We all need a Sam
“It’s all wrong. By rights we shouldn’t even be here. But we are. It’s like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn’t want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn’t. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something.”
– Sam to Mr. Frodo

Sooo beautiful. I love some good prose. You are in my thoughts and prayers this week, dear Annie.
LOVE! (that quote and you, oodles)
One of my favorite moments from that great story. Love it (and you).
I literally watched that exact clip last night, and although I have nothing more to say, I thought the coincidence could not go unacknowledged. May we all know the truth of that quote when times are rough.
So good.
Thinking of you, best friend. Hang in there– you’re in serious rainbow weather right now.
Yes,yes, yes. We all need a Sam.
We should all be so lucky to have someone like Sam in our lives. A true, life-loyal friend to help fill our buckets with encouragement and positive ideas.
[…] think on this quote, a favorite of mine that was posted by Annie Parsons earlier […]
great scene and written post-production, I think, in light of 9/11 a the time… and yet timeless
Some of the wisest, best and most encouraging words ever put down on paper… or typed into a blog. (Many of the other best ones are found elsewhere in the same book!). May the sun “shine out the clearer” for you.
Thanks, Annie :)
[…] post that mentions Lord of the Rings always gets my vote. But Annie’s? About how we all need a Sam? We all have a chance to turn back, but we don’t. Beautifully said, […]
